Two conversations that I regularly have with French people:
French person: So where are you from?
Me: I am American
French Person: Oh really! Where in the US?
Me: You won’t have heard of it.
French Person: No, no tell me, I will, I want to know!
Me: North Carolina…
French person: Bof! I don’t know that. Is it near New York? California? (sometimes they ask if its near Texas)
Me:….no, its in the South, next to the Atlantic
If I am feeling especially chatty I add that we have mountain AND beaches, which usually impresses them. (“Oh, how nice, that sounds beautiful.”)
Me: My name is Emily.
FP: Amelie
Me: No, Emily, without an A. There’s just one E at the beginning.
FP: Oh okay, Emilie.
Me: No, it ends with a y, not ie
FP: Oh, okay, I am confused, what?
Me: Here, just let me write it down for you.
One time a lady asked me if that was a common name in America. I started laughing and explained to her it had been the most common name for a number of years.
